Things To Do
It is well known that surfing is one of the main activities in the Mentawai Islands, thanks to the abundance of world-class waves. However, if catching waves isn’t your thing, don’t be discouraged; there’s plenty to see and do on the islands to make your holiday both busy and fun. So, what else is there to do apart from surfing?
Fishing:
Our family has a long-standing tradition as fishermen. Spearfishing is their specialty. We often invite guests to join us, and the experience is always rewarding. Whether you're an experienced fisherman or you just want to give it a try, we'd be honored to have you fish with us. Depending on the conditions, we can visit various spots; on days with small swell, you can simply venture out in front of the surf camp, with friends watching from their bungalows. A benefit of being hosted by fishermen? Freshly caught fish often on the menu.

Snorkeling:
The Mentawai Islands offer excellent snorkeling opportunities. Right in front of Mentawai Family Surfcamp you’ll find a vibrant reef with live coral and abundant sea life. Snorkeling in the pristine waters of the Mentawai will enrich your trip and create unforgettable memories. Commonly spotted species include parrotfish, sweetlips, and triggerfish. With some luck, you might also encounter beautiful angelfish or the occasional turtle swimming by. The warm, clear water invites you to explore every rock formation at your leisure. In addition to the reef directly in front, there are several other spots within a short walking distance north or south from your accommodation at Mentawai Family Surfcamp. If you don’t have snorkeling gear, don’t worry! You can borrow ours.

Yoga:
Enjoy waterfront yoga sessions with our certified instructor. We offer various classes, from strong Hatha to more relaxing Yin or slow flow. Whether you need a workout, a stretch after a long surf session, or simply some time to reconnect with yourself, Mentawai Family Surf Camp has you covered.
Please note: yoga classes are subject to availability. Check with us at the time of booking to ensure our yoga instructor will be at the camp during your stay.

Hiking:
There are several walking trails around Nyang Nyang (Masokut) Island. One popular trail leads from our camp in E-bay to Bang Bang, about 25 minutes north. This mixed trail combines coastal jungle and beach walking. For the more adventurous, another track starts behind Mentawai Family Surfcamp and crosses the island from side to side. This hike takes you through jungle, over small wooden bridges, up steep hills, and past a village to reach the east coast. From there, you can continue to Nipussi and, if you need a rest, watch the surf for a bit before making your way back. For this walk, we recommend speaking with us first; we can arrange a local guide to ensure you don't get lost in the jungle.

Snake Island Expedition:
If you're feeling adventurous and want to explore other islands, we can take you on a fun day trip to Snake Island. The island earns its name from the frequent sightings of snakes. Typically, we organize the day as follows: departing in the morning from Mentawai Family Surfcamp by boat, we go spearfishing (you can opt for snorkeling if fishing isn't your preference). Once we've secured lunch, we approach Snake Island to barbecue the freshly caught fish. We spend some time on the island, perhaps spotting a snake or two, and in the afternoon, we can check out nearby waves for a surf or do what most please us at that moment.
If you're not a big fan of snakes we can go to other islands.

Visit the Mentawai Tribes:
If you're interested in visiting the local tribes, speak to us, we can organise it with one of the local guides. Be mindful that this isn't a five-star holiday experience; you'll spend two nights with a tribal family, eating, sleeping, and hunting with them, immersing yourself in their way of life. Please note that Western standards of hygiene will not be met.

Rest and Relax:
Of course, there are plenty of places to enjoy what the Italians call "il dolce far niente" (the sweetness of doing nothing). Relax on our couches, read a book, lounge on pristine white-sand beaches, or play a game of cards. There will be many opportunities to chill and unwind if that's what you're seeking.
